Get away from that internet I'm cutting it down

Man, I love the Google "auto complete" feature. I typed in "get away fro" and today's title was one of the listed results. Sounds a little like the old "don't make me turn this car around" empty threat.

We all know the Internet is like a Hydra, if you cut it down three more grow back in its place, so obviously this is an empty threat as well.

When I was in high school, I was rather obnoxious (as most of us probably are/were), and tended toward speaking/shouting/acting/spazzing before thinking. The other day a memory occurred to me, and I held onto it to share with you. Sometimes, I'm really, really lucky that things turn out as they do, because my big ol' mouth has a lot of Trouble Potential.

It was a summer evening, and I had gone to a local mall with a friend of mine. It's an old, rather decrepit mall, and the parking lines are less than fresh. We'd finished our shopping, and were coming out of the doors, when in the twilight, I spot a man leaning over my car.

My. Car.

Oh no way. You don't mess with my car. That's just how it is, and even in high school I was a big Mama Bear about it. I took about three seconds to grab my friend, swear rather quietly, and run like the wind to fend this man off my car.

Now, my eyes aren't all that great. Even now, I remember not being able to see him in focus at all, and I FLEW over there ready to brawl rather than have my baby broken into. As I approach, I shouted something about "what do you think you're doing with my car?"

Somewhere before this point, most people's common sense would kick in and say...I'd rather have my car broken into than potentially be, oh I don't know..shot. Which is highly likely in this scenario for me, but I didn't think, I simply reacted.

After I shout, I slow down, because the man had noticed me, and was turning around. He was also wearing a uniform with a badge.

*cue ominous music*

Turned out, I'd parked where there wasn't really a parking spot (thanks barely there painted lines...couldn't see you!), and as we chatted, I calmed down, and he let me off. Thank goodness, I really could have gotten myself and my friend in quite a situation if he'd been some unruly thief or something.

Sometimes my instincts take over everything, and I dive headfirst into the shallow end. From what I understand in various talks with my dad, this is a genetic trait, and how we redheads of the family learn best.

Run for your life

A little update on my Get Healthy progress - I use SparkPeople for blogging about this, tracking my food and exercise, and gaining motivation and support from others. If you're wanting to get healthier and need a support network, I can't reccomend Spark enough. And it's completely, 100% FREE. How can you say no?

First things first. I weighed in on Friday, and today I finally decided to go ahead and let myself weigh in again. I was trying to only do it once a month, but that's really hard. So for now, when the urge is super strong I will, but I will not obsess about it.

Good news! I dropped 9 tenths of a pound! I'm tracking carefully now, I've worked out every day in some way since Friday, and I'm actually being conscious of what I eat, not just total calories. Shocking...common sense works.

emoticon Let's keep this train going!

After the Shamrock Stride 5k walk last month, I knew that I wanted to work up to being a runner, but I haven't had a goal race to work toward. Now, I do.
  • Now, I plan to outrun zombies.
  • Slide in the mud.
  • Run through a pond.
  • Get dirty, wet, and thoroughly happy.

I am going to train for Run For Your Lives, a 5k zombie obstacle course. It's basically like a live video game. You have 3 "health flags" that the zombie volunteers are going for, and if you emerge with any of those left, you're ALIVE. If you lose them all, you're DEAD, but either way you get a medal and a cool shirt, and bragging rights for having done a wicked awesome zombie run.

The one by me isn't until August 4, which gives me plenty of time. My only concern is that Matt and I will be celebrating our 10th anniversary (!!!!!!)  the day prior, and may be on a cruise during this time. But for now, I will train as though I'm doing that race, and we'll see what happens. I am just enamored with this idea, and I know I would have an absolute BLAST running this course.

Look out zombies, I'm going to outrun you!!

More coming soon

This week has been absolutely INSANITY, but I promise you I have a lovely mini-tutorial coming for you. I will show you how to take an outdated prom dress, make your kiddo happy AND have yourself a refashioned petticoat. All for $6 and some time at the sewing machine! (UPDATE - THE PETTICOAT TURNED OUT LIKE GARBAGE, SO NO TUTORIAL AT THIS TIME. IF/WHEN I DETERMINE A BETTER WAY TO UPCYCLE ONE, YOU'LL HEAR ABOUT IT!)

Matt is going to get some good photos of me in the petticoat so you can see how the finished product fills out your skirts. Unfortunately it's been raining like crazy, or the sun has peeked out and he hasn't been home. Hopefully we'll get that shoot in this week so I can finish the tutorial and share it with you!

In the meantime, between Timbers games (I lost my voice at tonight's game, between a poor show most of the game and TERRIBLE refs....eek) visiting family, and more, here is kiddo giving you an excellent demonstration of how I feel every day lately:

My Game Day Outfit! Sadly, you can't see my petticoat in this picture, but I'm revamping it to be a bit more ostentatious =D

We did a lot of knitting
and laughing
and knitting and laughing!
knitting en masse - we were even interviewed by the local news, but only a tiny bit of the interview made it on camera, and it wasn't my bit. It was still good, but of the stuff she talked to us about, they only used the most boring parts, of course!
SO glad I got there before the big crowds arrived!!

Super big sandwich! It took 4 of us to eat it, literally

Teamwork!

Crochet awesomeness spotted in the wilds of the Timbers Army!

My new, awesome friends <3

Sadly, this is the closest I got for player pictures

My Father In Law, screening out the smoke

Cheering our team as they go into the locker room

Super fun glittery confetti my friend Janet made for Opening Day

Hey, what's that?

Ever since I was a teenager or so, I've wanted a tattoo. I've always been fascinated with them, the artistry behind them, and why people choose the ones they do. But, I have always come up against the Wall of Indecision. For a long while, I originally wanted trailing ivy starting at my toes, winding up my foot, around my ankle and up my leg. But, I wasn't 100% on it, and I didn't feel a drive to go pay someone to stick needles in my foot for a few hours.

A few years after that thought had passed, I saw a 40 something woman with a very, very similar tattoo on tanned, not so stellar legs, and...well...I won't be getting one of those. It doesn't appear to age well at all.

Fast forward to 2009 - now, everything in my life felt like it was crumbling around me. Long story short, I leaned on God and my support network of family and friends more than I ever have. My faith grew deeper, and along the way, I realized that I want and need a physical reminder that He is always watching over me. Basically, I'm not in this alone.

I Googled for Bible verses that had to do with God always being with us, etc. I ended up finding a verse that said something to the effect of "Fear not, I am with you."

I emailed Matt, the designer man who happens to rock my socks when I say something like "hey I have this super vague idea, can you make it awesome?" and he makes it 99 different ways of awesome. I sent him the verse, said I want a tattoo having to do with that, but not just the text.

He came up with an amazing concept of it, and I set a consultation with Tanya over at Above The Pearl. Wednesday of this week was my appointment with her to go over what we'd be doing. She's so awesome, laid back and professional at the same time. We ended up having to rearrange the elements, and tweak just a tad to make it work where I want it.

Tanya is in seriously high demand, and May 28th is when I'll actually get the ink done. I'm very excited, but I figure I waited till I was nearly 30 to finally decide on one, I can wait a couple more months to have it done.

In the meantime, I'm going around with a Sharpie "mock up" if you will, a general outline of about what it'll look like, so I'm positive of placement, etc.

I just love it, and I can't WAIT to actually get it done and permanent.
